WOODY SEEMS APT

I haven't been to the last few gatherings, but I still feel very much part of the Soulon family. And here's a gift of some Woody Guthrie as we teeter on the brink of the next Great Depression. -- Mick Farren

Woody's got it goin' on.... I can't imagine what he'd have to say about the era of bling, bluster and banality in the airwaves.

I decided to google Woody, found his website, read about his childhood. When he was 18 years old in his poverty-stricken hometown (Okemah, OK):

"In 1920, oil was discovered nearby and overnight Okemah was transformed into an "oil boom" town, bringing thousands of workers, gamblers and hustlers to the once sleepy farm town. Within a few years, the oil flow suddenly stopped and Okemah suffered a severe economic turnaround, leaving the town and its inhabitants 'busted, disgusted, and not to be trusted.'

From his experiences in Okemah, Woody’s uniquely wry outlook on life, as well as his abiding interest in rambling around the country, was formed. And so, he took to the open road."

Hummmmmmmmmm--To me, knowing the current "drill, drill, drill baby drill" mentality of much of our country, and having researched how fast we could disintegrate domestic oil reserves at our current rate of consumption (like--a few years), Okemah is an interesting foreshadowing metaphor for an unchanging 21st Century United States...no?
